Successor to MTI Film’s industry standard Correct DRS™ software, the new product represents the next step forward in digital restoration.
The hit A&E series adds MTI Film’s turn-key onset dailies and media management system for a more stable and efficient workflow.
The producers of the A&E drama Longmire have selected MTI Film’s new CORTEX CarryOn as their onset media management tool for season three. The CarryOn provides on-set color, camera file offload and backup, and serves as the starting point for tracing media and metadata from the set through dailies and into post.
Longmire became the first production to implement CORTEX CarryOn in February. MTI Film is debuting the CarryOn at NAB 2014 (Booth SL15510), but provided the production with early access to the system and to CORTEX Dailies v 1.5, its all-in-one dailies software, to help improve the distributed, remote dailies workflow., “On Day 1 of using the new software, our workflow was already more stable and efficient than in previous seasons,” notes Bryan Raber, the show’s producer.
Longmire’s workflow begins on-set where DIT Timothy Gregoire, over the course of the day, offloads morning and evening drops using CORTEX CarryOn to process multiple camera cards simultaneously and back them up to a shuttle drive. He then applies primary color to one take for each scene and adds timecode-based comments about the overall look and any special circumstances, such as light changes during outdoor shots. The drives are then sent to a CORTEX Dailies system in the nearby production office, along with an export of the session’s CORTEX Manifest file. The Manifest includes the onset color metadata, as well as information about the offload and backup, including MD5 checksums.
In the production office, dailies assistant Aaron Natewa imports the media and relinks it to the Manifest file, noting any discrepancies such as missing or corrupt files. “It’s nice for the software to tell you when something has gone wrong,” enthuses Raber.
Natewa then syncs and transcodes the dailies while dailies colorist Mauricio Tassara logs in remotely from Los Angeles to color every take based on looks and notes provided by the DIT on set through the metadata in the Manifest file.
“That’s the greatest benefit,” notes Raber. “The CORTEX Manifest has made the conversation between the DIT and dailies colorist so much easier. Longmire is an extremely difficult show to color because it’s shot in the high desert where the weather is always changing. Using the CORTEX Manifest has resulted in extremely accurate color. The ability to add comments instead of having to adjust color and add dissolves every time the weather changes saves the DIT a lot of time.”
Dailies are passed to the show’s editor while the original camera files, Manifest and daily reports are shipped to the post facility in Los Angeles for assembly and finish. “With the CORTEX Manifests, I no longer have to worry if I received a file or not,” observes Raber, “or be concerned that it might be corrupt. We enjoy one-to-one consistency of color from set through post.”

Producers Antoinette Perez and Lawrence Epstein will oversee post work for more than a half dozen scripted television series.
Ramping up for a busy television season, MTI Film has added veteran producers Antoinette Perez and Lawrence Epstein to its post-production services division. Perez arrives from Pixomondo where she produced visual effects for such films as Oblivion and Red Tails. Epstein’s appointment is a promotion. He served for the past three years as MTI Film’s Night Operations Manager.
Epstein will oversee post-production work for several television productions, including Major Crimes, Hell on Wheels, The Walking Dead and Bates Motel. Perez’s responsibilities will include the shows Sirens, Dallas, Key and Peele, A Country Christmas Story and Through the Wormhole.
“Antoinette and Lawrence bring broad experience, tremendous energy and passion for post-production,” said MTI Film Executive Producer Barbara Marshall. “Our clients will benefit from their knowledge of the latest workflows and technologies, as well as their dedication to client services. They are wonderful additions to our team.”
Epstein joined MTI Film in 2010 after three years at Encore Hollywood where he held a similar operations role. His expertise encompasses editorial, color correction, graphics and visual effects.
Perez has worked in post production since 1994. She began her career at Encore Hollywood and later joined Cinesite, Europe, where her credits included Tomb Raider and the first two Harry Potter movies. She also held positions as Producer at at Prime Focus and CG Production Manager Rhythm & Hues.
David McClure, VP of Product Development, will join a panel of industry experts discussing "The Latest Flow in Digital Workflow" at the Post Production Master Class Burbank November 7. The Post Production Master Class is an intensive afternoon of presentations and panels on the business and technology of Post. The Hungarian FilmLab (Magyar Filmlabor), Hungary’s largest provider of film laboratory and post-production services, has purchased MTI Film’s flagship dailies processing solution, Cortex:: Control Dailies Ultimate Edition. FilmLab will employ Cortex::Control Dailies to service feature and television productions working in Hungary and throughout Europe. The system is capable of processing camera data from all popular digital cinema cameras, including cameras made by Sony, ARRI, Canon and RED, and creating media required for editorial, review and back-up, with or without applied color grading.
Bratislava, Slovakia-based systems integrator BoneheadZ, an MTI Film authorized reseller, assisted in the installation, providing pre-sales consultation, workflow design, systems integration and training services. The installation included one seat of Cortex::Control Dailies Ultimate Edition installed on a Hewlett Packard HP Z820 workstation with fiber storage and a capacity of 24TB. Hungarian FilmLab has since added a second seat and a workstation to boost capacity.
Engineers and support staff from MTI Film and BoneheadZ worked together from product selection through full operation. “MTI Film helped in solving of all the technical issues and answering all of the questions from the FilmLab,” notes Ladislav Hodinka, General Manager, BoneheadZ. “It is a wonderful example of cooperation between developer and authorized reseller, leading to a satisfied customer.”
Hungarian FilmLab is using Cortex::Control Dailies to build on its core post-production services by providing digital dailies services to its clients while they are in production. “We reviewed a number of digital dailies solutions and chose Cortex::Control Dailies, not only because it meets our technical requirements, but also because of its reliability and the outstanding technical support provided by MTI Film and its partners,” says Hungarian FilmLab General Manager Laszlo Aradi. “Cortex is also fully compatible with our new Hungarian FilmLab web dailies service.”
Hungarian FilmLab is currently using Cortex::Control Dailies to process dailies for several productions. They include three features: Mancs, directed by Robert-Adrian Pejo for Új Budapest Filmstudió; Coming Out, directed by Denex Orosz for Megafilm; and Parking Lot. They are also providing dailies service for In Treatment¸ HBO Hungary’s local version of the U.S. and Israeli psychoanalysis drama of the same name. Hungarian FilmLab used Cortex::Control Dailies to create LTO back-ups for another HBO Hungary production, Társasjaték.

To receive this certification, Alexa ARRIRAW footage was transcoded via Cortex and judged to meet ARRI's high standards of quality and fidelity. Houston-based systems integrator becomes latest addition to MTI Films’ international reseller network.
MTI Film has added Net Brains I, LP, a Houston-based systems integrator focused on Mexico and other Latin American markets, to its international reseller network. Net Brains will market and support MTI Film’s Cortex line of workflow solutions to broadcasters and film and television producers in its territory. It will also market Correct DRS™, MTI Film’s industry-leading film restoration platform. Net Brain’s clients include Televisa, TV Azteca and Genomma Lab International, as well as numerous independent producers and post-production service providers.

Net Brains and MTI Film demonstrated Cortex solutions for the first time in Mexico this month at Telemundo’s Cine Video Expo Televisión in Mexico City. MTI Film Director of Product Support Amy Hawthorne demonstrated the company’s flagship product, Cortex::Control Dailies, on Aberdeen’s Aberdailies hardware platform for remote or near-set dailies. (Cortex::Control Dailies is a complete workflow solution for dailies processing and deliverables production.) She also demonstrated Cortex::Convey, a streamlined transcoding solution.
“Visitors to our booth were impressed with the portability and low-cost of MTI Film’s Cortex products,” said Andrews. “Mexican producers are used to managing their workflows with very large and expensive systems. Cortex offers them a very compelling alternative.”
Hawthorne also commented on the enthusiasm of attendees. “We had people from every sector of the television industry interested in our demos,” she said. “We are very excited to offer our products to the Mexican market and to do so with the support of a great company in Net Brains.”
When The Film Foundation decided to restore Richard III, the non-profit film preservation organization approached Grover Crisp, Sony Pictures Executive Vice President, Asset Management, Film Restoration & Digital Mastering, Sony Pictures Entertainment. The job was to return the film as close as possible to its original version, which involved restoring over 100 shots. Cineric in New York dug up the missing trims and provided the 4K wet-gate scan, and Crisp brought in MTI Film for much of the restoration, including creating missing frames. Sony Pictures' DI and restoration facility Colorworks finished the job with a careful DI, and the film -- which has been released on BluRay by Criterion -- is expected to have a theatrical release through Janus Films.
The new 50th Anniversary Directors Cut of Lawrence of Arabia, which underwent digital film restoration processing at MTI Film, was awarded Best Archive Restoration/Preservation Title at the tenth FOCAL International Awards in London. The film was restored in 4K under the direction of Sony Pictures Entertainment EVP of Asset Management, Film Restoration and Digital Mastering Grover Crisp.
David Lean’s 1962 masterpiece, Lawrence of Arabia is widely considered one of the greatest films of all time. Prior to its 50th anniversary release by Sony Pictures last year, the film went through a meticulous restoration and re-mastering in 4K.
Throughout the film were sections where camera rolls had suffered exposure to the desert heat that caused the emulsion to dry and crack. This resulted in hundreds of small, vertical fissures in each frame. Although the problem, which appeared as white columns or streaks of light in release prints, had always existed, it had clearly grown worse over the decades. The cracks were thin, irregular lines 1 to 3 pixels wide separated by as little as 1 pixel in a 4K frame. It was initially thought that the problem was confined to 2nd unit footage, but thorough investigation revealed that almost every reel of film was affected. Moreover, each defect was unique so that one solution would not work for all.
Over months of restoration, MTI Film developed new algorithms, creating and modifying existing software, to address the problem. Considerable manual intervention was also needed. In some instances, scratches ran through multiple shots. These needed to be removed with great care to avoid affecting underlying imagery and grain structure. This was particularly challenging when faces were involved. Color correction was done by Scott Ostrowsky of Colorworks.

MTI Film is proud to have played a role in the 4K restoration of the classic film "Richard III." “Richard III” was restored under the direction of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s EVP of Asset Management, Film Restoration and Digital Mastering Grover Crisp under the auspices of The Film Foundation in cooperation with Janus Films, the BFI National Archive, ITV Studios, MoMA and Romulus Films.
The film is now widely available from The Criterion Collection.

MTI Film today announces that its Cortex product line now includes full support for Sony’s recently-developed XAVC recording format. XAVC is included in Cortex::Control Dailies DP, Pro, Studio and Ultimate editions and in the Stream, Pro, Studio and Ultimate editions of Cortex::Convey. Support for Sony RAW and SR Master formats is already included in all Cortex editions including the FREE edition of Cortex::Control Dailies.
Sony’s XAVC format, which is H.264 based, is a dedicated 4K format developed to foster 4K production in areas beyond feature films, including television, documentaries and commercials. The format provides a cost efficient digital imaging eco-system for 4K and high frame rate content. Sony’s F55 and F5 cameras include the XAVC codec.
